Formula 1 Silverstone: Hulkenberg victim of Perez’s impatience

He only became aware of the consequences half a lap later. On the way to Copse the end plate broke off. The Haas immediately lost massive downforce on the front axle. “That’s not tenable,” Hülkenberg radioed a lap later. He gave up on the seventh lap and came into the pits to change the front wing.

Magnussen fire does not help Hulkenberg

After the premature stop, Hülkenberg drove alone until lap 32 behind the field. Then teammate Kevin Magnussen’s power unit flared up on the Wellington straight and triggered a safety car. “Too late in the race,” said Hulkenberg, who was able to change tires again and catch up with the field. “The pace in traffic was actually solid after that, only it was a DRS train.”

Still, he benefited from a mistake by Nyck de Vries at the restart to bravely overtake Yuki Tsunoda on the inside at Copse. In 13th place was the end. The only positive thing is that Haas’ tire wear is not too bad for once: “It was pretty low for everyone, and it wasn’t a serious problem for us either.”

Engine alarm at Haas after damage series

Much more worrying is the Magnussen damage. After Hülkenberg’s retirement in Austria and Magnussen’s coasting in Silverstone qualifying, this major engine failure is the Ferrari customer team’s third serious power unit defect in just eight days. “The alarm bells are definitely ringing,” says Hulkenberg.

Nobody knows why only Haas is affected by such a series of defects at such short intervals. Overall, the mood at Haas is not the best. Williams has just finished seventh in the team Formula 1 World Championship 2023 repressed. “We’ve got to rearrange ourselves and see how we will proceed from right here,” warns group supervisor Günther Steiner. “We’ve got to get out of this gap.”
