Formula 2 Austria qualifying: Martins takes pole ahead of Vesti

Victor Martins was in a position to beat championship chief Frederik Vesti within the System 2 qualifying session in Austria. The ART driver beat the Prema driver by virtually a hundredth. The children’ hunt for instances went with out the expected rain or any main incidents. Jak Crawford will begin from the reverse grid pole in Saturday’s dash race.

This is how qualifying went: The seventh qualifying session of the 2023 Formula 2 season opened at an air temperature of around 28 degrees and a track temperature of 46 degrees. Iwasa was the first driver to set a best time. After all drivers had completed their first fast lap, Victor Martins took the lead with a time of 1:14.926 minutes. Meanwhile, Enzo Fittipaldi and Jack Doohan fell in behind the ART driver.

At half-time, Amaury Cordeel beat Fittipaldi’s time. However, the Carlin driver’s time was canceled because he exceeded the track limits. So Frederik Vesti inherited third place for the time being. In the final minutes, Martins once again secured provisional pole position ahead of championship leader Vesti. In the end Vesti couldn’t improve any more, neither could Pourchaire. The Sauber junior finished third behind Martins and Vesti.

The result: Kush Maini and Jack Doohan secured ranks 4 and 5 respectively. Enzo Fittipaldi only took 6th place after a blunder in the final attempt. Amaury Cordeel, Arthur Leclerc, Jehan Daruvala and Jak Crawford completed the top 10. The high-tech driver starts the sprint race from the reverse grid pole.

Incidents: Red Bull Junior Isack Hadjar had technical problems at the halfway point in qualifying and had to end the pursuit of the best times early. In addition, numerous pilots had to struggle with the usual track limit problem. Among other things, the times of Enzo Fittipaldi and Oliver Bearman were deleted. Jehan Daruvala prevented Enzo Fittipaldi from setting a fast lap on his penultimate attempt. The MP Motorsport driver misbraked, left the track and did not see Enzo Fittipaldi behind him when he came back.
